Pamploon: Book I of The Golden Scorpion Saga
Forged in the Great Basin, a desert land where it never rains, but into which the waters of neighboring lands all drain, Istolibba has arisen on the backs of its slaves. Enslaved by these same neighbors since ancient times, its people have only recently turned the tables. With everything from a demigod masquerading as a human ruler, a sentient pool of goo, a djinn guardian and his pet smokehand, a temperamental young earth witch, a levitating reptilian sorceress unleashed by the opening of a runedoor and an enigmatic martial arts teacher who can appear to be a man of any age and level of vigor, Pamploon is rife with intriguing characters in addition to moving scenes and intricate plot twists. Yet in the end it’s the tale of three very different people living very different, but intertwined lives. The Prefect of Pamploon, its sorcerer ruler, has a problem. No matter what he throws at him, the Golden Scorpion won’t die. Worse yet, there are three prophecies circulating. The first claims that he cannot die on the sand of the Arena floor, the second that he is to impregnate the witches of the Pamploon Coven, siring more changeling witches and sorcerers to conquer other lands, the third that he will lead a revolt and free their slaves. It’s only recently that the changelings, along with the jenja and thugs, their noble soldiers and insane war priests, freed their people and forged Istolibba. If their slaves revolt, the minions of the Kluuo Wizardcracy, the tjarljin tiger-human hybrids of the Black Forest and the windriders of the Windswept Steppes will invade and put them back into chains. Captured during the conquest of his Storm Coast, the Golden Scorpion was a peaceful fisherman. Despising his nickname, Solo Om just wants to die and reincarnate with his people, but his killer instincts won’t let him throw a bout. He can only pray that he never has to fight his friend Boswin, a witty young lad who’s only surviving due to fixed bouts. Charmed into romancing the witches, Solo has wild adventures while trying to slip by the Coven’s supernatural guardians and escape. Meanwhile, the Prefect conjures a monster that no man has ever defeated. But first the Sunken Palace’s request to purchase Boswin must be voted on by the Arena, lest he have to face it along with the Golden Scorpion.
